How to un-get ready after a Halloween party

How to un-get ready after a Halloween party

It's 2am. Your costume was a hit, your photos are spooky perfection, and your face is still wearing fake blood, glitter and three layers of waterproof mascara.

The temptation is to swipe a makeup wipe across everything and fall into bed. But heavy face paint, long-wear makeup and SPF need a little more than that, and rubbing tired skin rarely ends well the next morning.

The good news? Un-getting ready doesn't have to be a whole production. K-beauty's double cleanse was made for exactly this kind of night: melt it, wash it, soothe it. Below is how to remove Halloween makeup, face paint and glitter with our four-step routine, built entirely from Skin Cupid bestsellers, to take you from ghoul to glow in about ten minutes.

Wash it away: the second cleanse

Why it matters. The second cleanse removes any leftover oil and the last traces of makeup, sweat and glitter, so your skin is properly clean before bed.

How to do it. Lather a pea-sized amount with water and massage for 30 to 60 seconds. While you're there, check your hairline, the sides of your nose and under your jaw: face paint loves to hide in these spots. Rinse with lukewarm water and pat dry.

Glitter tip. Before you cleanse, press a piece of tape or a little cleansing balm onto stubborn glitter to lift it, rather than rubbing it across your skin.

Calm and hydrate

Why it matters. After heavy makeup, a late night and maybe a drink or two, skin can feel tight and look tired. Hydrating, soothing products help it feel comfortable again by morning.

How to do it. Mist or pat on a soothing toner, follow with a calming moisturiser, and add a sleeping mask if you'd like extra hydration. Skip strong actives like retinoids and exfoliating acids tonight: your skin has done enough.

Frequently asked questions

What's the best way to remove Halloween face paint?

Start with a cleansing oil or balm on dry skin, since most face paint is oil-based and oil dissolves oil. Massage gently, emulsify with water, rinse, then follow with a gentle water-based cleanser. Avoid scrubbing, which can leave skin feeling irritated.

Are makeup wipes enough after a party?

Wipes can shift the surface layer, but they tend to smear heavy makeup around and need more rubbing. A double cleanse with an oil and a foam or gel cleanser removes long-wear makeup, SPF and face paint more thoroughly and more gently.

What is double cleansing?

Double cleansing is a K-beauty routine with two steps: an oil-based cleanser to dissolve makeup and SPF, then a water-based cleanser to wash away what's left. It's especially useful after heavy makeup, like a Halloween look.

How do I get glitter off my face?

Lift loose glitter first by pressing a piece of tape or a little cleansing balm onto the area, rather than rubbing. Then double cleanse as normal, paying attention to your hairline and around your eyes.

Should I use my retinoid or acids after a Halloween party?

It's best to skip strong actives like retinoids and exfoliating acids that night. Focus on soothing and hydrating instead, then return to your usual routine once your skin feels comfortable.

How do I get hair spray, glitter or wax out of my hair?

Brush out tangles and loose glitter before washing, then shampoo twice if needed, focusing on the roots. Finish with a nourishing treatment on the mid-lengths and ends to help hair feel soft again.

Can I just use a cleansing oil if I'm too tired for the full routine?

Yes. If you only manage one step, make it a cleansing oil to remove makeup and SPF, then add a moisturiser if you can. Your skin will thank you in the morning.
